Find out how we screen for future health

Heart attacks and strokes are much less likely if we keep our arteries
in good shape. The Westbourne Surgery keeps two registers of patients
to be screened.
With the Secondary Prevention Register our practice nurses offer an
annual lifestyle and risk factor analysis to patients who already
have known cardiac or cerebral artery disease.
The Primary Prevention Register includes patients who have known risk
factors of arterial disease.
During the health screen, we will enquire into your risk factors of
family history, personal history, and your present pattern of exercise,
diet and other lifestyle factors. We can check your BP, height and
weight with cholesterol analysis performed at the Huddersfield Royal
Infirmary. We can advise you on realistic changes you can make to
improve your risk.
We work as a team with hospital and community services to provide checks
at least twice a year to our Type II diabetic patients. By keeping
your blood sugar at the right level, diabetic complications affecting
eyes, kidneys and feet are much less likely.
Nurse Penny Lucker and Dr Anthony Bairstow run the diabetic clinic.
An appointment is sent by post with a blood test request form to
be performed at the Huddersfield Royal Infirmary two weeks before
the appointment is due.
We check your diet, weight, body mass index, blood pressure, kidney
function and cholesterol. We can also arrange for annual eye and
podiatry screening. By eating sensibly and optimising your medications
you can improve your chances of future good health.
